UHA: UNITED HIPPIES OF AMERICA

Yeah, I know. We of the hippie heart were not and are not known for being a united, rules type of a bunch. BUT, we are still united in wanting peace and love and brotherhood. A union of man so-
it stands to reason that not only are we a union but we should be, to my way of looking at things, union supporters.

Now, I’m a union baby born.I’ve lived first hand how unions built the middle class. I’ve heard the tales from my Italian immigrant grandfather. Unions brought the different ethnic communities together for a common goal when the robber barons of old strove to keep them separate and distrustful of each other. People with full bellies and paid bills are far less likely to take out their fears and frustrations on those different from themselves.

We need the good unions back. We need a hippie union to form. No dues, no meetings for us.

UNLESS one happens to just sort of break out in the middle of a festival or a happening somewhere. A union of good vibes and peace and giving to others and our communities.

Good will towards those in need. These times are hard but they also gives us an opportunity to reshape our little bits of the planet into a better place if we share the life lessons that we’ve picked up on our journey. Our road has been rough and bloody at times. But, it is still fresh in the history of our country and our world. It’s relevant. Sadly. It’s been stripped of much of it’s meaning and has become a parody of sex and drugs and some old news footage. I’m beginning to think that some of that rewrite of our times has been deliberate. Even our peace symbol has become a fashion trend, not a rallying icon. Truthfully I’m not quite sure what to think about that.

I had a dream last night. One of those half asleep/half awake ones. Remember the old commercial with the women singing, “Look for the union label…”in garments? I dreamed the we at WORLD WIDE HIPPIES were standing in a vacant litter filled city lot, singing the song but holding up a big sheet with a peace sign. Dreams are odd things. It was in back and white and I usually dream in color. Plus I can’t SING!

SO, how about we adopt the peace sign as our union label and put it invisibly on everything we do?

There is power in the union. As the old song goes.
